A Little Closer
Matthew Petock
Fiction, United States 2010, 73', HDCAM
Writer: Matthew Petock
"The father figure is essential in every family, not in terms of personification or biology but in terms of authority or law. Sheryl, a single mother is lifting on her own the weight of responsibility of the growing up of her two sons. Marc (16) her eldest, is discovering sexuality in a fixative way, practically raping his girlfriend and Stephen (11) her youngest, falls in love with his strict high school teacher. The incapability of Sheryl to occupy both parental roles, distance the members of the family. Visual intimacy and realistic performances in Petock's unpretentious debut feature about the every day struggle of single parenting. (Nina Veligradi)"

Aliki
Richard Wiebe
United States 2010"There are strange, rare and beautiful moments when we observe the death of a flamingo. The film's editing is free from the regular cycle of life, and Richard Wiebe gives us the chance of celebrating both life and death at the same time. The film left us with a sense of apprehensive. Something we must always remember. (Miguel Valverde)"

Erään Hyönteisen Tuho
The Death Of An Insect
Hannes Vartiainen, Pekka Veikkolainen
Animation, Finland 2010
"A ballet of dead insects invades the city of Helsinki and the Baltic. Flies, bees, spiders and butterflies form a morbid and yet moving tapestry. The beauty of the film consists in mastering a combination of digital imaging, X-ray scans and stop motion shots culminating in a spectacular explosion of movements. (Karim Shimsal)"

Grande Hotel
Lotte Stoops
Documentary, Belgium 2010
"Sir Arthur Brandão was mad! The creator of the gigantic Hotel built in Beira, Mozambique, went beyond megalomania. Built in 1955, it provided a small paradise of mammoth dimensions to its residents. It didn't took much time till the clock turned 12 and the suites were turned into dumps, the gambling halls into brothels and the swimming pool into a swamp. Presidents, Kings and politicians were turned into prostitutes, hustlers and refugees living not so peacefully with no water nor electricity to the abandoned corridors of a decadent majesty. Would you check in? (Nina Veligradi)"

Jenny
Ingvild Søderlind
Fiction, Norway 2010
"It's a film about the upstream movement, about belonging. Jenny doesn't see herself in the other's kids games, but her attention is drawn by Adam. Through an interesting game of light and darkness, we assist to the oscillations of the power relations between the two of them, when she sees something she mustn't had seen. (Ágata C. Pinho)"

Memee
Evelyn Verschoore
Animation, Belgium 2010
"An animation in the improbable set of a care home. A film about old age, solitude, yearning and desire. Everything mixed in a very moving way. Evelyn Verschoore designs new visual solutions all the way, using the sound and the image and she builds a humorous great finale. (Carlos Ramos)"

Tartarugas - Lose This Child
 Israel 2010
"Sometimes a beach isn't just a beach. As the sun goes down over the ocean, the sand comes to life and takes on the forms of an entire mini ecosystem of aquatic life. Sea turtles are born, eels emerge to pursue their prey and Mother Earth orchestrates it all. Stop motion animation music video for a song by the Eatliz band."

O Último Troll da Noruega- Det Siste Norske Trollet

Animation, Norway 2010
"The last troll in Norway is walking the rural roads of the Norwegian countryside. It is nice and quiet, but a bit lonely. The troll has adapted to modern society; it's wearing trousers and is becoming addicted to sugar. But where have all the other trolls gone? It's a mystery."
